    Born in Gorodok, Russian Federation
Graduated from Naval Academy for the Nobility (1818)
Fought in Greek war of independence (1821-32), Russo-Turkish War (1828-29), and Crimean War (1853-55)

Why he might be annoying:

He was said to be so obsessed with the sea since joining the navy that he preferred to be on board of a military ship or in a military port for the rest of his life.
The surprise attack he led on the Ottoman fleet at Sinop outraged Europe, dragging Britain and France into the Crimean War. (November 30, 1855)
It also caused a surge of anti-Russian sentiment in western Europe.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was just 13 when he was enrolled in the Naval Academy for the Nobility in St. Petersburg (1815)
His in-laws, who are Jewish, disapproved of him, so they forced his wife to have their daughters take her maiden name.
Despite the Soviet Union's rejection of much of its imperial history, they still held him in high regard to the point that it established one of its highest military decorations in his honor, which is still used today in Russia.
