The Resume
(282 BC-226)
Located at the Greek island of Rhodes
Commissioned by Rhodian sculptor Chares of Lindos
One of the seven wonders of the ancient world
Why Colossus of Rhodes might be annoying
It only stood for 56 years until an earthquake hit the area and it collapsed into the nearby harbor.
Ptolemy III offered to pay for the restoration of the toppled monument, but the citizens refused after consulting an oracle.
It remained in ruins in the harbor until the Arabs invaded Rhodes and sold the remains to a Jewish man from Syria (654 AD).
It is the shortest lasting ancient wonder.
Why Colossus of Rhodes might not be annoying
Pliney the Elder said of it: 'But even lying on the ground, it is a marvel.'
It was a huge statue made from marble, bronze and iron, with stone framework.
It was once said that few people could make their arms meet around the thumb of the statue.
It was dedicated to the sun god Helios and to the unity of Rhodes.
It supposedly took 900 camels to transport all the metals from the statue to Syria.
It inspired French engineers and sculptors to build the Statue of Liberty.
