He dropped out of college.
He married three times (including once to Ginger Rogers).
He opposed American entry into World War II, resulting in his films being banned in many areas during the 1940s.
His role in 'All Quiet on the Western Front' is his only really noteworthy one.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served as a medic in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II.
He was against smoking and refused to advertise it.
He was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for 'Johnny Belinda.'
His performance in 'All Quiet on the Western Front' remains one of the most compelling of all time.
