The Resume

    (April 15, 1875-March 3, 1953)
    Born in Carroll, Ohio

Why he might be annoying:

He risked his undefeated record to face Jack Johnson as the 'Great White Hope' (July 4, 1910).
He announced, 'I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro.'
His loss to Johnson led to riots by whites across the US.
He alleged he had been drugged before the fight.
He went bankrupt in the 1920s because of poor investments.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had a handshake agreement with manager William Brady, who said Jeffries' word was better than a contract.
He was known for his ability to absorb brutal punishment in the ring.
He retired partly because few other boxers would face him.
He later admitted that even in his prime he could never have defeated Johnson.
In his biography, Johnson named Jeffries as the greatest heavyweight of all time.
