(October 9, 1908-November 21, 1987)
Born in Coffee County, Alabama
Two term populist governor of Alabama (1947-1951; 1955-1959)
Known for supporting racial integration and his hard drinking and womanizing
Nicknamed 'Big Jim' due to his six foot eight inch height
Why he might be annoying
Prior to being elected governor, his only political experience consisted of being a delegate at the 1944 Democratic national convention.
He started out as an insurance salesman.
He toured with a country music band, brandishing a mop and bucket with which he was going to clean out the Capitol.
He attended three colleges; the University of Alabama, Howard University and George Washington University and didn't graduate from any of them.
He was a heavy drinker and is famous for showing up at a televised debate with George Wallace drunk.
Married twice with nine children, he was still the subject of repeated paternity suits by other women.
Why he might not be annoying
He opposed Jim Crow and racial segregation.
His support of equal rights for blacks probably cost him re-election. That and showing up drunk for debates.
He once said, 'As long as the negroes are held down by deprivation and lack of opportunity, the other poor people will be held down alongside them.'
He served in the Merchant Marine during WWII.
His administrations were considered honest.
His daughter married his one time opponent, George Wallace, with his gracious blessing.
