World Leader
    (June 16, 1926-April 1, 2018)
    Born in Huehuetenango, Guatemala
Joined Guatemalan army as cadet (1946)
Graduated from School of the Americas in Panama (1950)
    Became Brigadier-General (1972)
Defected from Roman Catholic Church and Became a minister in Church of The Word (1978)
    President of Guatemala (March 23, 1982-August 8, 1983)
    Founded Guatemalan Republican Front (1989)
He overthrew his predecessor in a coup and set up a military junta that established secret tribunals with the purpose of eliminating dissent.
He tried to combat Marxism in Guatemala, but his harassment of the country’s rural population quickly turned them to Marxism.
His regime caused genocide against Guatemala’s Maya population, killing 70,000 of them and causing over 100,000 of them to take refuge in Mexico.
He used his Protestant faith to justify his authoritarian rule by calling dissent against him a rebellion against God.
His Protestant beliefs hastened the decline of his popularity in the predominantly Roman Catholic country.
Other factors in his growing unpopularity included the value-added tax he imposed to increase government revenues and internal conflicts within the military elite.
He is buddies with outspoken televangelists Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell.
He said, ‘A true Christian has a Bible in one hand and a machine gun in another.’
He tried to run for president twice even though he was forbidden to do so (1990 and 1995).
He has been accused of crimes against humanity by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Rigoberta Menchú (1999).
Attempts to put him and his former comrades on trial for human rights abuses were unsuccessful so far.
He opposed communism and sided with America by fighting the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.
Ronald Reagan declared, 'President Ríos Montt is a man of great personal integrity and commitment. ... I know he wants to improve the quality of life for all Guatemalans and to promote social justice.'
He conceded that the army had committed 'excesses' during his rule (2006).
Ironically, his brother Mario Enrique is a Roman Catholic bishop who is in charge of the church's Human Rights Commission in Guatemala.
