    (January 21, 1867-January 28, 1965)
    Born in Brussels, Belgium
Staff officer under Ferdinand Foch in World War I
Member of the Supreme War Council (1917-18)
Headed a French military mission to Poland during the Polish-Soviet War (1920)
    High commissioner of Syria (1924-25)
Chief of Staff of the French Army (1931-35)

Although raised by a Jewish family, he became an anti-Semite.
During the Dreyfus affair, he was one of the most outspoken denouncers of Dreyfus in his regiment.
He received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour for his service in Poland, even though he admitted, 'The victory was Polish, the plan was Polish, the army was Polish.'
Without orders from Vichy, he imposed a quota that removed most Jewish students from schools in French Africa.
In 'Casablanca,' Peter Lorre butchers his name so badly that most viewers think the letters of transit were signed by General De Gaulle, who, as a member of the Free French, would not be signing documents in Vichy Morocco.
He was part of the group that negotiated the armistice to end the fighting in World War I.
He publicly protested a Vichy-German agreement to establish Axis bases in Syria, Tunisia and Senegal.
After the Allied invasion of North Africa (November, 1942), he urged Marshall Petain to declare war against Germany, leading to his arrest by the Gestapo.
