Their name sounds like it would belong to a duo, rather than a trio.
Each of their #1 hits had a different pair of backing singers as Sugar.
They toured as an opening act for Gallagher.
When Rowland went solo, his debut album was given the punning title ‘Sugar Free.’ (1982)
After a few unsuccessful years on his own, Rowland reformed the act, going through another dozen or so singers as Sugar over the years.
Rowland was a former member of the Stamps Quartet (1973-75), who backed Elvis Presley on tour.
Their catchy tunes and male/female vocal arrangements lead them to be nicknamed ‘the country ABBA.’
Before starting her solo career, Sylvia auditioned to be a member of Sugar.
Rowland participated in the Music City Invitational Tennis Tournament benefiting the children’s hospital at Vanderbilt for four decades.
