    He achieved Olympic success despite being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (1992) and diabetes (1997).
    He raised 1.8 million pounds for charity running in the London marathon (2006).
    His fifth gold medal victory was named the 'Greatest British Sporting Moment' in a Channel 4 poll (2002).
