TV Series
    (September 25, 1964-May 2, 1969)
    Aired on CBS
Spin-off of the Andy Griffith Show
    Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle
Frank Sutton as Sgt. Vince Carter
Premise: Gomer leaves Mayberry to join the Marines, where his naivety exasperates his drill instructor
The show had a military theme and contemporary setting, but no one seemed to notice there was a war going on in Vietnam.
Nabors said he would 'go home with a headache' from Sutton yelling at him all day.
Due to broadcast TV restrictions, Sutton's language as a drill sargeant could not be nearly as colorful as, say, R. Lee Emery in 'Full Metal Jacket.'
It was one of several shows canceled during a purge of rural-themed programs that CBS felt attracted 'too old and too poor' a demographic.
It was in the Nielsen top ten every season.
As the show progressed, Carter's relation with Gomer evolved into that of a father figure.
Nabors was named an honorary corporal (2007) with a Marine spokesman saying that Gomer Pyle embodied the qualities of honesty, loyalty and devotion to duty.
