He suffered from depression.
Many of his plays moralized.
He deserted his bankrupt parents to escape their disgrace.
He was obsessed with the idea of the romantic rebel with a destructive mistress.

Why he might not be annoying:

He wrote many of his finest works after he left Norway.
He wrote 'Peer Gynt,' for which Edvard Grieg wrote a famous score.
His plays didn't always end 'happily ever after.'
He was hated by the critics, but he rejuvenated 19th Century theatre.
