Though she had her own Kentucky radio show by age 11, her family failed as farmers and they moved away.
She dated Elvis in the early '60s.
Her songs 'Needles and Pins' and 'When You Walk in the Room' were not successful for her, but huge smashes for The Searchers.
A prolific songwriter, ironically her first major single was written by Burt Bacharach.
She said, 'I wanted to be an artist, just like Georgia O'Keeffe, and to be accepted for what I did. But being one of the first female singer/songwriters was a brand new thing and people didn't know exactly what to make of it.'

She toured with The Beatles during their 1964 American debut and played Monopoly with George Harrison in their hotel room.
Her song 'Don't Doubt Yourself Babe' was featured on The Byrds debut album.
She co-written songs with Jimmy Page and Randy Newman, and her music has been covered by Dolly Parton, Pam Tillis, Tracey Ullman, Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty.
'Put A Little Love In Your Heart' went certified gold in 1969 and was a smash hit 19 years later for Al Green & Annie Lennox.
She co-wrote 'Bette Davis Eyes,' a Kim Carnes breakout song, the #1 Billboard Single for 1981 and a Grammy Award winner for her.
