    (February 18, 1916-August 12, 1999)
    Born in Montreal, Canada
    Mayor of Montreal (1954-1957, 1960-1986)
Companion of the Order of Canada (1967) and Grand Officer of the Ordre national du Quebec (1987)
    He loved opera.
He was extremely brazen./n/He claimed the 1976 Summer Olympics ‘can no more have a deficit than a man can have a baby.’
Following his Olympic proclamation, a newspaper cartoonist caricatured him as a ‘pregnant’ man.
His mishandling of the event created massive cost overruns that took more than 30 years to pay off.
He created the first public lottery in Canada as a ‘voluntary tax.’ It ultimately turned into something else.
He won the 1960 municipal election against the same candidate that defeated him in 1957.
The Metro (subway system) was conceived during his tenure, for Man and His World (though plans had been in place long before).
He also oversaw the construction of the five-theater Place-des-Arts.
Unlike his successors, he was happily and fiercely dedicated to his city and citizens.
The Ile-Sainte-Helene Metro station (where Man and His World was accessible) and Parc des Iles were renamed in his honor (May 2001).
He was parodied by a local impressionist for the 40th anniversary of the World’s Fair.
His name comes from the French word for 'flag.'
