    Birth name was Georgette Louise Meyer
    War correspondent from World War II to Vietnam War
    She smoked.
    She was a promiscuous teen.
    After 15 years of marriage, she divorced fellow photographer Tony Chapelle.
    Her trademark was wearing custom-made fatigues with pearl earrings.
    She changed her name to 'Dickey' in honor of her hero, explorer Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd.
    At 16, she graduated high school as valedictorian.
    She earned a scholarship to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
    She left her MIT aeronautical engineering studies after realizing she'd rather pilot planes than design them.
    Her photos frequently appeared in 'National Geographic' and 'Reader's Digest.'
    In 1965, a landmine threw her 20 feet in the air and a piece of shrapnel lodged in her neck. She died from her injuries.
    She was the first member of the press killed in Vietnam and first American woman reporter killed in battle.
