Why he might be annoying
Before the success of the Macy*s department store, all of his dry goods businesses failed.
He had a red star tattoo on his arm.
He named his company after himself.
He obnoxiously replaced the apostrophe with a red star (or asterisk) to spell Macy*s.
Today, his corporation continues to absorb other department store giants, such as A&S, Sterns and Jordan Marsh Department Stores.
He was rumored to have a terrible temper, which was accompanied by an ulcer.
He left his wife and kids behind when he went to California during the Gold Rush. He was unsuccessful in California.
After all of his business failures, he still convinced somebody to lend him $20,000 to build the first Macy*s department store.
It was his idea to price things ending at $.99.
Why he might not be annoying
He spent four years as a sailor.
In his first year of business, Macy*s profited $90,000 (1858).
His fixed market pricing plan (no haggling) had been so successful, that the business model of other retail stores followed suit.
After 20 years, the first Macy*s store expanded to occupy the ground level of 11 adjacent buildings (1877).
He advanced women's roles in the work place by being the first retailer to award a female an executive position.
He pioneered the practice of advertising sales in newspapers.
Macy*s was the first retailer to secure a liquor license.
His store had been passed down to his business associate, Lazarus Straus, who developed and operated the Macy*s housewares department.
The Macy*s Herald Square location expanded to over 1 million square feet of retail space, making it the largest store in the world (1924).
His corporation organizes the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade® in New York City (started 1924).
