    Her later career catered to European opera houses.
    She won first prize during a radio contest, which included a scholarship to a musical conservatory that was racially segregated.
    Contest organizers arranged for her to attend Boston University instead.
    In 1961, audiences were irate that Wieland Wagner, grandson of Richard Wagner, cast her as 'Venus.'
    She garnered numerous awards, including France's Commandeur des Arts et Lettres, induction into the St. Louis Walk of Fame and a 2009 Kennedy Center Honor.
