    He shot and killed his bird subjects prior to painting their portraits.
    He was an avid hunter.
    He worked as a taxidermist, then became a vagabond traveling around the country looking for new bird species to paint.
    He spent time in jail for bankruptcy after a failed business venture.
    He came to the United States in part to avoid serving in Napoleon's French Army.
    His bird paintings remain popular and culturally relevant centuries after his death.
    His vividly accurate life-size drawings were met with critical acclaim from the art and scientific communities alike.
    He was one of the first to study bird nesting by attaching strings to birds' legs on his family's estate.
    He was a conservationist, and was deeply concerned about the destruction of bird and animal habitats.
    He was inducted into Britain's Royal Society by King George IV.
