    She was two years older than her husband President Millard Filmore. They were engaged for seven years.

    American citizens were upset that she was gifted a $3,000 carriage with two horses.
    At the age of 44, she tripped on a sidewalk twisting her ankle, causing chronic pain for the rest of her life (1842).
    Her dad died when she was two.

    She quit teaching to become a mommy.
    She was a voracious reader. She owned over 4,000 books.
    She was the first First Lady to work outside of the White House.
    She played piano.
    She brought a harp and piano to the White House, starting a music room.
    As first lady, she hosted Stephen Foster, Jenny Lind the 'Swedish Nightingale,' Washington Irving, Charles Dickens and William Thackeray.
    She was shocked that the White House contained no books (not even a bible).
    She founded, with a $2,000 grant from congress, the White House Library.
    She started the first public library in Sempronius.
    She often boasted of her friends, helping them get recognition and jobs.
