    She was quick to betray her former allies, which in this case was the Sandinistas.
    She had a stubborn nature that came from her criollo, or Creole (European Hispanic), heritage.
    Despite progress under her presidency, Nicaragua was still embroiled with massive unemployment.
    She was criticized for rejecting some constitutional reforms.
    In an attempt to cut government spending, she eliminated social programs, particularly those helping women.
    She is the first elected female head of state in Latin America.
    When she was studying in America, her father was diagnosed with lung cancer, his death a year later interrupting her education (June 1947).
    She and her husband criticized the Somozas, which led to the latter’s assassination (January 10, 1978).
    On the other hand, the Sandinistas were notoriously inept and friendly with Cuba and the Soviet Union.
    She was careful not to attract too much attention from the Sandinistas by not siding with the Contras.
    Nicaragua witnessed peace, economic growth, a negotiation over its enormous foreign debt and an end to an economic embargo set up by Ronald Reagan under her presidency.
    In order to preserve Nicaragua’s wildlife, she declared three sections of the Miskito area as natural parks (October 31, 1991.
    She struggled for a bright future for Nicaragua.
