    (September 4, 1908-July 1, 1999)
Born in Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada
Directed 'Hitler's Children' (1943), 'Tender Comrade' (1943), 'Murder, My Sweet' (1944), 'Back to Bataan' (1945), 'Crossfire' (1947), 'Obsession' (1949), 'The Sniper' (1952), 'The Caine Mutiny' (1954), 'Raintree County' (1957), 'Warlock' (1959), 'Walk on the Wild Side' (1962), 'The Carpetbaggers' (1964), 'Where Love Has Gone' (1964), 'Shalako' (1968) and 'Bluebeard' (1972)
    Member of the 'Hollywood Ten'
His name was tough to spell and pronounce ('dah-met-trick').
He earned a scholarship to the California Institute of Technology, but dropped out after a year.
He got off the Hollywood blacklist by making a return appearance before the House Un-American Activities Committee and naming names.
He justified talking by saying, 'Not a single person I named hadn't already been named at least a half-dozen times and wasn't already on the blacklist.'
When he appeared at a symposium on the blacklist at the Barcelona Film Festival (1988), blacklistees such as Jules Dassin refused to share the stage with him.
His father beat him regularly until juvenile authorities allowed him to live on his own at age 15.
He and Jean Porter were married for 51 years until his death.
'Crossfire' was one of the first Hollywood films about anti-Semitism.
He agreed to testify before HUAC only after serving four and a half months in prison.
He said, 'I did not want to remain a martyr to something [Communism] that I absolutely believed was immoral and wrong. It's as simple as that.'
