Why Joplin, Missouri might be annoying:

    It is often erroneously thought to be named after ragtime composer Scott Joplin. (It was actually named after Rev. Harris G. Joplin.)
    The legacy of its past as a mining town include unsightly tailings piles and mine shafts that occasionally collapse to create sinkholes.
    Bonnie and Clyde killed two lawmen here (April 13, 1933).
    Several of its historic buildings were razed during the 1960s and 70s in an attempt at urban renewal.
    It was struck by a tornado that killed 158 people, injured over 1100, and caused over $2 billion in damages (May 22, 2011).

Why Joplin, Missouri might not be annoying:

    It was the lead and zince mining capital of the world up through World War II.
    Notable people born here include poet Langston Hughes, golfer Hale Irwin, and actors Bob Cummings and Dennis Weaver.
    In the first two years after the 2011 tornado, volunteers provided over a million hours of service in helping to rebuild.
