The Resume

    (July 20, 1930-December 19, 2021)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
Best known for portraying Truly Scrumptious in the movie ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ (1968)
Also appeared in the films ‘Thursday’s Child’ (1943), ‘Nicholas Nickleby’ (1947), ‘Anna Karenina’ (1948), ‘Fools Rush In’ (1949), ‘The Admirable Crichton’ (1957) and ‘Death Ship’ (1980)
Appeared on Broadway in ‘My Fair Lady’ (1958-59), ‘Brigadoon’ (1962-63), ‘What Makes Sammy Run?’ (1964-65), ‘A Little Night Music’ (1990) and ‘James Joyce’s ‘The Dead’’ (1999-2000)
Appeared on the London stage in ‘Bet Your Life’ (1952), ‘Paint Your Wagon’ (1953), ‘Babes in the Wood’ (1953), ‘A Hatful of Rain’ (1956), ‘Hans Anderson’ (1977-78) and ‘Noel Coward’s Semi-Monde’ (1989)

Why she might be annoying:

She had her first screen test on her 12th birthday.
She rejected offers to portray Eliza Doolittle in ‘My Fair Lady’ three times before finally accepting.
She was married four times, divorced three times.
During her marriage to Broadway songwriter Richard Adler she turned down a lot of roles: ‘I thought if I was working and he wasn’t it would increase his insecurity.’
Despite the success of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,’ her film career failed to take off, largely because she broke through at a time when big budget musicals (like ‘Star!,’ ‘Darling Lily’ and ‘Paint Your Wagon’) were increasingly viewed as box office poison.

Why she might not be annoying:

She said her favorite show biz experience was appearing in ‘Paint Your Wagon’ alongside her father, London stage veteran Bobby Howes.
She sang at the White House for Presidents Dwight David Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
’Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ producer Albert Broccoli called her ‘A rare combination of the right kind of beauty and the right kind of talent.’
Robert Osborne said, ‘I’ve never heard even a hint of temper tantrums or diva behavior from her. It’s clearly not part of her DNA.’
