He got along so badly with other cricketers that several quit the Yorkshire club when he was appointed captain (1971).
Fellow Test cricketer Ian Botham called him 'totally, almost insanely, selfish.'
He was dropped from his last Test team when he was discovered to have been playing golf after claiming to be too ill to participate in a match (1982).
He was suspended from international play for three years after defying a UN ban and leading a cricket tour of apartheid-era South Africa (1982).
He reportedly refused to socialize with fellow commentators or the production staff.
Cricketer Steve Harmison said, 'Within the English dressing room, his views are regarded as a joke.... Indeed, quite a few of us cringe whenever he comes near.'
His ex-lover, Margaret Moore, accused him of assault (1998).
He nearly died at age eight when he fell on iron spikes, impaling his chest.
Despite his friction with other players, he was popular with the Yorkshire crowds.
He was the first English cricketer to pass 8,000 in test runs.
A British Sky Broadcasting official said, 'He fulfilled all our hopes. He was animated, intelligent, informed, with opinions that got the attention of most people.'
He successfully battled throat cancer (2002-03).
Fellow broadcasters said he became much more pleasant to work with after his illness.
