Why he might be annoying:

He was appointed by Dwight Eisenhower during the recess of the United States Senate.
He was a Catholic Democrat appointed by Republican Eisenhower to help him gain votes in the 1956 presidential election.
He was a strong advocate of judicial activism.
He was reliably liberal during his tenure.
He was seen as a relic of the Warren Court in the Rehnquist Court with only Thurgood Marshall backing his opinions.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was approved by the U.S. Senate 99-1 (the 1 being Joseph McCarthy).
He was said to be an unbelievably nice guy.
Almost all of his colleagues loved working with him because of his friendly nature.
He felt the goal of the Supreme Court was to right social wrongs.
He adamantly supported women's rights and opposed capital punishment.
He wrote 1,360 opinions, more than any Justice except for William O. Douglas.
He was a kindly man who believed in 'essential dignity and worth of each individual.'
He joined the majority in many of the Warren Court's decisions that expanded individual rights.
Antonin Scalia, a strong opponent of his liberal ideals, called him 'probably the most influential justice of the century.'
