    Prime Minister of South Africa (1948-54)
    He opposed South African support for Britain during World War II.
    His government officially implemented the apartheid policy of complete segregation.
    He called international criticism of apartheid 'busy-bodyism.'
    He was a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church before entering politics.
    He played a major role in having Afrikaans recognized as an official language of South Africa (1925).
    He was the subject of a satiric London revue featuring a black American jazz singer crooning, 'Don't malign Malan/Because he dislikes our tan.'
