Actor
    (November 5, 1930-March 8, 2016)
Born in The Bronx, New York
Acted in 'I Died a Thousand Times,' 'All the Young Men,' 'Pit Stop,' 'Cool Hand Luke,' and 'Kelly's Heroes'
Appeared in the Broadway plays 'A View From the Bridge' and 'A Memory of Two Mondays'
Best known as Aron Trask in 'East of Eden,' opposite James Dean (1955)
Despite a decades' long body of work, he is almost exclusively known for his screenshots on several of The Smiths album covers.
Ironically, he wasn't even the first choice of Morrissey - who wanted to use a pic of Harvey Keitel in Scorsese's 'Who's Knocking at My Door' for the 'Strangeways Here We Come' cover, but couldn't obtain grant permission. He settled for Davalos instead.
He briefly shared an apartment with James Dean during the filming of 'East of Eden' at the suggestion of Elia Kazan - allegedly to curb his penchant for late night carousing. It didn't work.
He claimed that living with Dean the two got so into character as rivaling siblings that he came off believing that they actually 'hated each other.'
He was of Finnish and Spanish descent.
He is the grandfather to actress Alexa Davalos.
He won the 1956 Theatre World Award for his performances in Arthur Miller's plays 'View From the Bridge' and 'A Memory of Two Mondays.'
He received acclaim for his regular role on the short-lived Civil War series 'The Americans,' playing a Confederate soldier who joins opposing older brother Darryl Hickman.
He was out partying with Dean's Rebel Without a Cause co-stars Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo the night of Dean's fatal accident.
As the story went, the three were discussing Dean's promising future with Nick Adams, who remarked he probably wouldn't live past thirty (they learned that he had been killed later the same evening).
