    She abandoned Hollywood because her skin was 'too light' for studio standards.
    Very few of her films have survived over time.
    She was called '...the most famous and most versatile actress' in early black cinema.
    She refused roles that were demeaning to African-Americans.
    She died from postnatal complications just seven months after giving birth to her only child.
