He selected himself as docking module pilot for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project over fitter candidates.
He was known by his nickname.

He lost his left ring finger in a childhood farm accident.
He flew 56 combat missions over Europe during World War II.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.
He was scheduled to go up on the Mercury mission Delta 7, but was grounded due to an erratic heart beat.
He was the only Mercury astronaut not to fly a Mercury mission.
He died of a malignant brain tumor.
