Native American Icon
    (circa 1781-March 24, 1824)
    Born in Alabama
    Creek Indian Chief and prophet
British ally during the War of 1812
Led warriors known as Red Sticks
Leader of attack that would become to be known as "The Fort Mims Massacre'
Known among Native Americans as Red Eagle or Truth Teller
The Creeks were not prepared for war; few wanted it; they performed poorly and had little effect on the larger War of 1812.
He was guided by voices and visions.
He used these claimed voices and visions to recruit the relatively peaceful Creeks to join and to fight for the British and against the Americans.
The attack on Fort Mims caused the death of over two hundred men, women, and children. The dead included whites, blacks, even local Creek residents.
He lost approximately one hundred of his own men in the attack.
He was only one eighth Creek himself, and his father was actually from Scotland.
The Creeks suffered terrible reprisals after the war because of him, but he went unpunished (due to an American desire to use him as a pawn to keep the peace).
He settled down after the war and became a planter and slave owner.
He did in fact, hold up his end of the bargain after the war and helped maintain the peace.
He unsuccessfully tried to keep the attack on Fort Mims from turning into the massacre that it did.
He is a hero to some Native Americans.
He was obviously an inspirational leader.
You have to admit, Red Eagle is a pretty cool nickname.
