    She and President James Garfield had a great passionate romance in love letters, but had problems when they were personally together.
    President James Garfield said his marrying her was his biggest mistake.
    She threaten to divorce President James Garfield unless he ended his adulterous affair with Mrs. Lucia Gilbert Calhoun.
    She was anti-social.
    She dedicated a room in the White House for her own solitude.
    She changed political parties from Republican to Progressive to Democrat.
    After President James Garfield ended the affair, they became real close and loved each other.
    She almost died from malaria (May, 1881).
    That same year her husband was assassinated (1881).
    She graduated college and became a teacher.
    She liked to paint, draw and read.
    She travelled under the name 'Mrs. Greenfield.'
