Artist

The Resume

    (August 23, 1905-August 15, 1982)
Born in The Bronx, New York
Hired as an artist for the comic strip 'Fritzi Ritz' (1925)
    Introduced Fritzi's niece, Nancy (1933)
    Strip renamed 'Nancy' (1938)

Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of school to become a copy boy at the New York World.
He spent a year as a ghostwriter before his name appeared on the 'Fritzi Ritz' strip.
He was a self-confessed square who called himself 'the Lawrence Welk of cartoonists.'
His sense of humor in 'Nancy' made Bil Keane's 'Family Circus' look cutting edge.

Why he might not be annoying:

He worked as a gag writer for silent film star Harold Lloyd.
Admirers of his drawing style, including Art Spiegelman and Bill Griffith, consider 'Nancy' a brilliant example of minimalism.
He won the Reuben Award for Cartoonist of the Year (1976), which cited him as 'a dynamic artist who helped shape the contemporary comics page.'
The American Heritage Dictionary chose one of his 'Nancy' strips to illustrate the entry for 'comic strip.'
