    He dropped out of UCLA and began working as a dancer in films during the 1930s.
    He joined the Communist Party (1939).
    Born Jewish, he later became an Atheist.
    He invoked the 5th Amendment during the McCarthy Hearings (1951). He was then blacklisted.
    He protested Elia Kazan's lifetime achievement Oscar (1999).
    His name sounds close to General Robert E. Lee.

    He left UCLA due to financial hardship.
    He co-founded the Screenwriters Guild of America.
    During World War II, he wrote numerous War Bond films, and received a commendation for his work.
    After being blacklisted, he was forced to write under the pseudonym 'J.E. Selby.'
    His wife died from cancer (1982).
    He stood up for civil liberties and personal loyalty.
    Just weeks short of his birthday, a meth-addicted former go-go boy, Keven Graff, broke into his home and decapitated him.
