Why he might be annoying:

He sets his films in Baltimore (where he grew up) whenever possible.
Many of his films are just personal stories.
He directed both of those Jerry Seinfeld/ Superman/American Express commercials.
He refused to remove certain scenes from his film, 'An Everlasting Piece,' that reflected unfavorably on the British government and then slammed the production company (Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks) for bagging the film to a very limited theatrical release.

Why he might not be annoying:

He said about making films now days: 'It gets harder and harder to make movies about human beings. These movies are like an endangered species. Everything is 'simplify, simplify' now. How many movies have sub-plots anymore?'
With his debut film 'Diner,' he helped launch the careers of Tim Daly, Ellen Barkin, Paul Reiser and Daniel Stern.
He managed to remain commercially successful while still directing his trademark personal story films.
He won the 1989 Best Director Oscar for 'Rain Man' and has been nominated for four others.
