    ( -January 12, 1967)
    Circa 1893
Professor of psychology at the University of California
After dying of cancer, became the first person cryonically frozen for future re-animation
Currently in the care of the Alcor Life Extension Foundation
In order for cryonics to succeed, medical science will not only need to find a cure for cancer but also a cure for the cellular damage caused by being frozen.
The cryonics team did not show up until an hour after his death, so he may have been frozen too late for eventual revival anyway.
His freezing was set to be the cover story on 'Life' magazine, but was bumped at the last minute for the death of three astronauts in the Apollo I fire.
His wife Ruby did not believe in cryonics and had herself cremated, so if he succeeds he will be making the journey into a second life alone.
Of seventeen people frozen before 1973, he is the only one to remain in cryonic suspension.
Unlike many later 'cryonauts' who had just their heads preserved, he was frozen whole, so medical science won't have to cure decapitation to revive him.
Despite his body having been transferred to different cryonics capsules at least three times and being shuttled between several cryonics facilities, a 1991 investigation concluded that he had not been thawed and refrozen.
Cryonics may offer a slim chance at a second life, but burial offered none.
