    He was an alcoholic and drug-abuser (most notably, heroin).
    He was fired from many bands due to his heroin addiction.
    He smoked.
    Many of his album titles are a play on his last name ('Blue Train,' 'The Last Trane,' 'Traneing In').
    His name sounds like a toilet on a train loaded with coal.
    His father, uncle, and grandparents died when he was 14.
    He was in the Navy for 2 years.
    He recorded many landmark jazz albums.
    After kicking his heroin habit, he recorded one of the most critically acclaimed jazz albums, 'A Love Supreme.'
    He played in 'the Miles Davis Quintet' and 'Dizzy Gillespie's Orchestra.'
    He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame (1980).
    He was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992, 25 years after his death.
    He died of liver cancer.
    His son, Ravi Coltrane, followed in his foot steps and became a saxophonist.
