Why he might be annoying:

He had a temper.
He was not a good candidate to be a spy because of his temper and outspoken honesty.
When his spy mission ended, he went to the shore, but his signal was observed by the wrong boat and he was captured with incriminating documentation in the soles of his shoes.

Why he might not be annoying:

He believed strongly in the American ideal.
When the British hung him, his alleged final words were 'I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.' (September 22, 1776).
At a time when women were usually not educated, he held special classes from 5 to 7 AM to teach young ladies.
He would then teach his male students for the rest of the day.
Prior to his hanging he requested a bible and it was denied.
He was given paper and was allowed to write two letters (to his mother and to an American officer).
Those letters were destroyed because they didn't want it reveal that he had such a strong resolve even in the face of death.
