    (July 13, 1969- )
    Born in Mieres, Asturias, Spain
    José Ramón Andrés Puerta
Former chef at ‘Jaleo’ in Washington, D.C.
    Started ThinkFoodGroup LLC, in 1993
Founded World Central Kitchen, in 2012
Became a naturalized US citizen in December, 2013
Owns restaurants in Las Vegas, Mexico City, Washington DC, Beverly Hills, and Philadelphia
Known for his groundbreaking avant-garde cuisine and Spanish tapas
Frequent guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show, and Conan; Frequent Guest Judge on reality-competition shows Iron Chefs
Backed out of a deal with Donald Trump for a restaurant at an in-progress Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C., citing Trump's comments made about Mexican immigrants for his decision (Jul. 8, 2016)
He first gained celebrity as an Iron Chef contestant.
He cited dumping a tray of Canelones into a restaurant fish tank as his most embarrassing professional moment.
He became a US citizen through the legal channels, but took issue with Donald Trump’s rhetoric directed at those who didn’t.
He released a statement asserting that Trump’s comments ‘make it impossible for my company and I to move forward with opening a successful Spanish … More than half of my team is Hispanic, as are many of our guests.’
The Trump Organization responded by filing a $10 million lawsuit, charging him with breach of contract, in which he agreed to pay rent for a ten-year period (Jul. 31, 2015).
His legal team responded with an $8 million countersuit of his own. Soon after, he referred to Trump as a ‘maniac’ during an address to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (Oct. 2015).
His countersuit came after his appeal to dismiss Donald Trump’s suit against his company was denied by the presiding judge on the case (Jul. 1, 2016).
His complaints about Trump’s comments were dismissed as ‘unrelated’ to business dealings by Trump Organization reps (and who’s to say they were wrong - as long as the guy makes Tapas, who the hell cares what a guy he does business with says?)
He taught culinary arts at Harvard, and later the International Culinary Center.
He has leant his name to the cause of nutritional education and hunger prevention.
He beat Bobby Flay in the 'Battle Goat' face-off, during his star-making stint on 'Iron Chef.'
He received the Order of the Arts & Letters Award from the Spanish Government (2010).
He was awarded ‘Outstanding Chef’ by the James Beard Foundation (2011).
He is credited with single-handedly popularizing Spanish Tapas-style dishes in American restaurants.
President Obama is a big fan, frequently patronizing his eateries in DC and lauding him as ‘the quintessential American success story.’
He was appointed an Ambassador for Citizenship by the White House, even accompanying the President and First Lady on their 2016 trip to Cuba (as the US ‘Culinary Ambassador’).
He was one of 12 National Humanities Medal recipients, awarded to him for ‘cultivating our palates and shaping our culture’ (Sept. 2016).
