He pissed off various family members by including characters based on them in his novels.
His paternal grandparents stopped speaking to him after publication of 'The Great Santini' and his sister cut him off over 'The Prince of Tides.'
After writing 'The Great Santini,' he had a nervous breakdown and attempted suicide.
He has been married three times and divorced twice.
The Margaret Mitchell estate rejected his proposed sequel to 'Gone with the Wind,' reportedly over his suggestion that he might kill off Scarlett O'Hara.

Why he might not be annoying:

'The Great Santini' improved his relationship with his abusive dad, who changed his behavior to prove he was not like the father in the book.
He was fired from a teaching job for refusing to use corporal punishment on the students.
'The Great Santini' and 'The Prince of Tides' became critically acclaimed movies.
He said his third wife gave him an appreciation for 'the extraordinary beauty of older women.... I had no idea a man in fifties could fall in love with a woman in her fifties.'
