Why he might be annoying:

    Before teaching public speaking, he tried without success to become an actor.
    He changed the spelling of his last name to take advantage of the fame of Andrew Carnegie.
    The New York Times said there was a 'subtle cynicism' to his approach of changing other people's behavior by changing your reaction to them.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He would wake up at 4 AM to milk the family cows, then ride a horse for an hour to get to the University of Central Missouri.
    'How to Win Friends and Influence People' sold over 15 million copies and remains in print after more than 70 years.
    He said, 'Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.'
