    Goaltender for the New York Rangers (1953-57) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (1958-70)

    He changed his surname to Bower after an estrangement with his family.
    His nickname during his career was 'China Wall.'
    He was 34 years old when he became an everyday player in the NHL.
    He often complained to the media about the hard slap shots he took from Bobby Hull.
    He initially objected to the NHL's adaptation of the two-goaltender system.
    Despite having poor vision, he was considered a stellar goaltender in his prime.
    He guided the Leafs to four Stanley Cup championships (1962-64, 1967).
    He served in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces prior to pursuing a hockey career.
    He shared the Vezina Trophy with future Hall of Fame goaltender Terry Sawchuk.
    He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame (1976).
