Canaanite Mythology

    Born in Israel
Religion of the Canaanite people of ancient Israel
Polytheistic and to a certain extent pantheistic
Posited that the gods were superhuman beings of two types; El who inspired awe in people (like a spectacular sunrise or sunset) and Baal who were very good at something, like a good farmer would be a Baal of agriculture
    Head god was named El
Other gods included the Baal of the sky and rains, Yam-Sea, the god of lakes and rivers and Mot, the god of the hereafter
A great deal is still not known about the faith, especially local variations.
According to the Bible, its followers fought almost nonstop against the Israelites.
There was no concept of a difference between church and state, priests were considered public servants and vice versa and certainly no idea of a separation between church and state.
Temple prostitution was practiced in its temples.
According to expert Theodor H. Gaster, surviving literature from the time makes it difficult to tell what is literature and what its followers actually believed.
Very ritualistic in practice, devout followers practiced sacrifices (read: parties) almost every day of the week.
Baal was by definition a good guy for a change as opposed to how the Bible portrayed him.
It was talked about extensively in the Old Testament.
Its extensive and literate myths almost certainly had a great influence on the Greeks.
Rituals were not only meant as petitions for immediate help, but, were to metaphysically represent the perfect ideal of the situation, that is the rites were re-enactments showing the situation if eveything was perfect.
Its followers were massacred by the ancient Israelites.
Its acolytes didn't fly planes into buildings or wake you up on Saturday mornings trying to save your soul.
