Army Green Beret (1968-71)
An attempt by the US Marshalls to arrest him for failing to appear in court on a weapons charge led to a standoff in which Weaver's 14-year-old son Sam and wife Vicki and Marshall William Degan were killed (August 21-31, 1992)
Why he might be annoying
He was a salesman for Amway in the early 70s.
He moved to Ruby Ridge, Idaho, after his wife had visions of an upcoming apocalypse and the revelation that they would be safe in the mountains.
He referred to the US government as the ‘Zionist Occupation Government.'
He attended at least three Aryan Nations functions in Idaho.
One of Timothy McVeigh's motives for the Oklahoma City bombing was avenging Ruby Ridge.
He said McVeigh was ‘no different from the federal government. One has a badge and the other don't.'
Why he might not be annoying
He failed to appear in court on the weapons charge because the wrong date had been written on the notification sent to him.
He and his daughter were fired on while trying to recover Sam's body for burial.
As part of their psychological warfare, after Mrs. Weaver was killed FBI agents repeated over bullhorns, ‘Good morning Mrs. Weaver. We had pancakes this morning. What did you have for breakfast?'
He was acquitted on charges of murdering Marshall Degan, with the jury ruling he had acted in self-defense.
During the trial, government agents admitted that the FBI had tampered with evidence and that crime scene photos given to the defense were actually from a staged re-enactment.
Because of prosecutorial misconduct, the judge ordered the government to pay part of Weaver's defense costs.
A wrongful death suit against the government for the killings of Sam and Vicki was settled with $100,000 going to Weaver and $1,000,000 to his three daughters.
He said that if McVeigh had come to him with his bombing plans, ‘I would have told him to forget it.'
