    (February 21, 1951-June 2, 2006)
    Born in Phoenix, Arizona
Keyboardist for the Tubes (1973-85) and Grateful Dead (1990-95)
Formed the band Missing Man Formation (1998)
Played with Dead members Mickey Hart and Phil Lesh during their solo tours
    He suffered from depression.
He and his wife Lori were thrown off the Tubes' tour bus for their non-stop fighting.
When he auditioned for the Dead, he was sleeping in a barn and contemplating moving to Mexico.
He continued smoking (both cigarettes and pot) after being diagnosed with emphysema and throat cancer.
He committed suicide in front of his wife by slashing his throat.
Drummer Mickey Hart praised his harmony singing, saying 'He could go where others couldn't.'
He was dedicated to his craft, practicing for hours a day.
He was close to Jerry Garcia and, according to Dead biographer David McNally, 'He was extremely shattered by Jerry's death.'
He was upset when Bob Wier, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann held a 'Grateful Dead family reunion' tour and did not invite him.
He commented about the Dead's 'keyboard curse,' 'I am aware that I could die doing this job, but I was dying of boredom before the job came up, so I thought I'd take my chances.'
