Why he might not be annoying:

Alone, he successfully shot down 28 Japanese aircraft, while his squadron shot down 94 enemy fighters. They also had 203 enemy aircraft listed as 'damaged or destroyed.'
He spent a year and a half as a POW in a Japanese camp, after being shot down by a Japanese plane.
He was presented the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Truman, which had been awarded to him by President Roosevelt while he was listed as MIA (Missing in Action).
He wrote a book about his squadron's exploits in the Pacific during WW II.
He was the most well known and decorated Marine Corps' flying ace during WW II.
He once said: 'Just name a hero, and I'll prove he's a bum.'
