Why he might be annoying:

He is more famous for the musicians he mentored than for his own body of work.
He has a reputation as a difficult and demanding employer, which may explain the constant turnover of personnel in his bands.
    He has been divorced twice.
He appeared in the infamous 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club' film.

Why he might not be annoying:

He bought his first guitar while on leave serving in the Korean War.
He studied art design in college, and designed many of his album covers.
Members of Bluesbreakers included Eric Clapton; Jack Bruce of Cream; the original Fleetwood Mac lineup of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Peter Green; Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones; and Andy Fraser of Free.
Mick Taylor said, 'There's no better way to learn how to play blues guitar than with John Mayall.'
For his 70th birthday, he reunited with Clapton and Taylor for a concert that also was a fundraiser for Unicef.
