Why he might be annoying:

During the Spanish Civil War, he was lent arms by the governments of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler.
He respected Hitler and was pro-Axis for much of World War II (though Spain never actually entered the war).
He suddenly turned anti-Axis at the end of World War II, when Germany began losing, to prevent any punishment from the Allies.
During his rule, all political opponents were oppressed.
It is estimated that nearly 200,000 political prisoners died of starvation and executions because of him.
He had many Spanish towns and landmarks bear his name.
He once said that his government was 'based on bayonets and blood, not on hypocritical elections.'

Why he might not be annoying:

His father abandoned the family when he was a boy.
He graduated with honors from the Toledo Military Academy in 1910.
He was the youngest general in Europe at one point (1926).
He kept his country out of World War II, saving the lives of many Spanish people.
He was strongly anti-communist throughout the Cold War.
He was the butt of the Chevy Chase Saturday Night Live on-going joke 'Francisco Franco is still dead.'
