Charles was expelled from Washington University in St. Louis over his advocacy of modern architects, like Frank Lloyd Wright.
Before teaming with Charles, Ray was an abstract artist, but little of her work survived.
In their early catalogs, Charles was the only one listed as designer, even though Ray was an equal partner.

Why they might not be annoying:

Their first success was a plywood splint mass produced for the US Navy during World War II.
Examples of their furniture are part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art.
Charles said, ‘In our chairs, we have not attempted to solve the problem of how people should sit. Instead, we accepted the way people do sit and operated within that framework.’
The Industrial Designers Society of America named them the most influential designers of the 20th century.
