    Attended Connecticut College (1967-1969), Middlebury College (1971), and Syracuse University (1975)
    Wrote ‘The Housekeeping Book’ (1984), ‘How the García Girls Lost Their Accents’ (1991), ‘In The Time of the Butterflies’ (1994), ‘Homecoming’ (1996), ‘¡Yo!’ (1997), ‘Something to Declare’ (1998), ‘In the Name of Salome’ (2000), and ‘The Woman I Kept to Myself’ (2004)

Why she might be annoying:

    She had a lavish lifestyle during her childhood back in the Dominican Republic.
    Her relationship with her parents worsened when she was sent to a boarding school at 13, especially because they returned to the Dominican Republic every summer just to remain Dominicans.
    Autobiographical elements in her novel 'How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents' caused her mother to stop talking to her and also displeased her sisters.

Why she might not be annoying:

    She is one of the most successful Hispanic writers of her time.
    She and her family fled back to New York City when her father’s involvement in a plot to overthrow Rafael Trujillo was exposed.
    Three months later, three of her father’s co-conspirators were executed.
    She encountered discrimination in her school due to her Hispanic heritage.
    She became a writer because writing helped her deal with the hardship of getting used to a new culture and language.
    Her works focused on life as an immigrant.
    She is also a skilled artist who illustrated pictures for children’s books.
