He was sent to reform school for cutting classes too often.
    He abused heroin.
He moved to Sweden as a protest against the Vietnam War (1970).
'Eagle-Eye' isn't a nickname, it's the actual name he gave his son.
Miles Davis said, 'Anyone can tell that guy's not a trumpet player.... Every note he plays he looks serious about, and people will go for that, especially white people.'
He kicked his heroin addiction after going through a methadone treatment program.
He received a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts to present music workshops in the Watts ghetto of Los Angeles (1982).
He was an early world music proponent, incorporating influences from African, Turkish, Indian and Indonesian music, and earning the nickname 'the Marco Polo of jazz.'
In addition to trumpet (and the similar cornet), he played piano, bamboo flute, berimbau (a musical bow from Brazil), doussn'gouni and xalam (stringed instruments from Mali), and conch.
In concerts he was described as playing 'with childlike abandon.'
