Sports Executive
He was named Secretary for Sports by dictator Francisco Franco (1967).
He insisted on being addressed as 'Your Excellency.'
He always demanded a chauffeured limo and the presidential suite at the finest hotel in any city he where he conducted IOC business.
The IOC was rocked by repeated corruption scandals during his tenure.
Shortly before stepping down as president, he appointed his son to the IOC, an act John McCain called 'Samaranch's last gasp of nepotism, which has characterized his entire reign.'
He returned the Olympics to fiscal health after the financially disastrous Montreal games.
He attracted a record number of participants to each successive Olympics during his presidency.
He helped lift restrictions on professional athletes to allow the best in the world to compete.
He appointed the first women to the IOC.
An internal investigation expelled several IOC members for accepting bribes but cleared Samaranch himself of wrongdoing.
